A new documentary is shedding light on Wendy Williams’ ongoing personal struggles, including her battle with alcoholism and life under a court-appointed guardianship.
The hour-long special, TRAPPED: What Is Happening to Wendy Williams?, premiered on May 19 on the ID Channel, offering a closer look at the former talk show host’s current circumstances.
According to sources, Williams, now 60, lives in a secured assisted living facility in New York City.
At one point, she reportedly had some freedom within the building but experienced a setback on her birthday when she made her way to a rooftop bar, indulging in multiple drinks and suffering a relapse.
Following the incident, Williams was allegedly moved to a more restrictive memory care unit, where she’s confined to a secured floor 24/7 unless granted permission to leave by her guardian.
In 2022, Williams was placed under guardianship and was later diagnosed with primary progressive aphasia and frontotemporal dementia (FTD).
Some experts featured in the documentary suggested her symptoms might be linked to long-term alcohol use, pointing out that alcohol-induced dementia is one of the leading causes of cognitive decline.
Williams has previously spoken out about her health and sobriety. In a March 2025 interview, she addressed rumors, saying: “I’ve had my devices and I have to tell you something: I am easily going on with my life, alcohol-free.”
Meanwhile, legal and medical debates continue about her condition and capacity to make decisions about her care.
Earlier this year, her guardian requested a new round of neurological and psychological evaluations. While the court reportedly ordered this testing to happen in March, sources claim Williams declined to participate.
In response, Williams said she wasn’t aware of those claims, jokingly adding, “Bulls—. I am open to what I am open to and I can’t talk about it right now.”
As the conversation around her health and guardianship continues, TRAPPED offers a raw, sometimes troubling glimpse into the life of a beloved TV personality facing complex personal and medical challenges behind the scenes.
